Commencement Speakers in Providence and Washington

Providence College in Providence, RI and the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, recently announced the speakers who will speak at their respective Commencement ceremonies in May 2015.

Darlene Love, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member who began her career as a backup singer in the 1960s and found rebirth as a star in her own right decades later, will present the Commencement Address at Providence College’s Ninety-Seventh Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 17.

The Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception is honored to announce that Helen M. Alvaré will be the speaker at Commencement ceremonies this May. Prof. Alvaré is currently an Associate Professor of Law at George Mason University School of Law, where she teaches Family Law, Law and Religion, and Property Law. She received her law degree from Cornell University School of Law and her master’s degree in Systematic Theology from the Catholic University of America. Prior to joining the faculty of George Mason, Prof. Alvaré taught at the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, and for ten years was the Director of Planning and Information at the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities at the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. She continues to serve as an advisor to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as a consultor for the Pontifical Council of the Laity, a consultant for ABC news, and contributor to news outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, and USA Today. She has written extensively on marriage, parenting, non-marital households, and the First Amendment religion clauses.
