Jubilee Mass and Ohio Statehouse Celebration in Columbus

November 22, 2015

The Dominican Province of St. Joseph inaugurated its celebration of the 800th Jubilee of the Order of Preachers with an opening Mass at Saint Patrick Church and a gala at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, November 14, 2015.  Archbishop Bernardito C. Auza, the Apostolic Nuncio-Permanent Observer of the Holy See the United Nations, was the principal celebrant; the text of his homily can be found can be found here. Why in Ohio? During the month of November, 2015, the Ohio Statehouse is hosting a special exhibit titled, “Settlers of Ohio: A History of Service to the Soul of the People,” which highlights the fact the Dominicans were the first priests in the State of Ohio, shortly after the founding of the state.  The Dominican Province of Saint Joseph (Eastern, USA) traces its American roots to these first days in Kentucky and Ohio.  It seemed fitting, therefore, to begin the celebration of the establishment of the Order of Preachers at the place of our founding in this country.
